The newly-released sequel to the city-building game already has loads to offer. But with Cities: Skylines 2 mods, your gaming experience can get even better.
The modding community has done an amazing job improving the original Cities game, giving it plenty of additional features and opening up plenty of opportunities for customization. However, the new game did a wonderful job implementing most of the changes immediately in the base release.
Some people might even think that the modding community has outlived its usefulness – after all, everything that the players wanted is already available! But we disagree: the modding community has done an amazing job improving the original game, making it interesting and engaging for years to come. We can fully expect for the same group of people to do the same with the sequel as well.
Whether it’s remaking real-life locations, enhancing realism, or adding a wacky, fantasy element to the game – anything in between, modders will be there to make it happen. We already know that the base game is bigger than ever before, in both scale and editing options. But how will the Cities: Skylines 2 mods help improve the game experience even further?
Will there be Cities Skylines 2 mods?
Yes, there will be mods on Cities: Skylines 2. However, they will not be on Steam Workshop anymore. Instead, the developers will move them to the new Paradox Mods platform.
In a blog post, the developers mentioned that this move was important to make the game more cross-platform friendly. An unified system, not depending on Steam, will help the console players gain access to the same mods as the PC players.
The developers will handle the moderation process, the access to it will be completely free, and players should not notice any major differences between the two.
However, it’s still not clear what the Cities: Skylines 2 mod release date will be. It’s expected to be weeks after the game’s release on October 24, so we expect that to happen until the end of 2023.
Cities Skylines 2 mod wishlist
There were plenty of amazing mods we loved on the original Cities: Skylines. With the expanded game, and modders less focused on building edits to offer basic city-building features, we expect them to go wild.
We loved the additional cosmetic changes to the game, adding different types of buildings or vehicles to the game. But we also enjoy some small gameplay changes that give you a realistic or wacky flair to the game.
Here are some interesting Cities: Skylines 2 mods we would love to see on the game:
- Famous sets from movies, TV, and games. We’re talking Game of Thrones castles, architecture from Lord of the Rings, a Nakatomi Plaza from Die Hard, or maybe something right out of GTA V, or Cyberpunk 2077.
- Disaster campaigns. Dealing with the effects of climate change with floods and fires is always an interesting challenge. But something like a full-fledged zombie outbreak could also be really fun.
- Historical layers. As time goes by, regular buildings soon turn into heritage. Having to work with your historical city centers, turning them into sights, and having to incorporate them into your city’s modern framework is a great challenge.
- City councils and politics. You are the key decision maker in Cities, and other people act as your messengers. But your city has people – and they have ideas as well. Lobbying, public opinion, and even corruption could add a great new layer to the game.
