Every city needs a good public transportation system. Buses, trains, ships, and airplanes bring people to the city. Buses use roads, trains connect to existing railways, ships work on open water maps, and airplanes link the city to the world through airports.

In a developing city, residents can initially rely on buses and taxis for transportation. As the city expands, you can consider investing in additional transit options like trams and subways. If you’re willing to allocate space for larger train stations, passenger trains can also serve local commuters.
The cost of tickets plays a significant role in citizens’ travel decisions. When choosing their transportation, citizens consider factors such as travel time, comfort, and cost. While time and comfort are key considerations, the affordability of the option can influence them to choose between public transportation and using private vehicles.
Cities Skylines 2 Bus
Buses are the starting point of your city’s public transportation system. They are affordable and flexible, but traffic affects their efficiency. You’ll need a Bus Depot for maintenance. Buses come in two types: traditional fuel and electric. To use electric buses, upgrade the depot.
Buses not only serve your city but also connect to outside areas. Once you have a Bus Depot, you can create intercity bus lines, with stops at a bus station or regular bus stops.

Taxis are a common feature in Cities: Skylines 2. They work like regular cars, transporting people around the city. In the early game, they also bring new residents who don’t have cars. Taxis are flexible but have limited capacity and can add to traffic issues.
To keep taxis running, you need a Taxi Depot. Initially, they can only pick up passengers at taxi stands, but with a dispatch center upgrade, they can pick up fares anywhere. You can make the service more eco-friendly by upgrading the depot to support electric taxis, reducing noise and pollution.

Trams are a flexible and green transportation choice for a growing city. You can add tram tracks to existing roads or build separate tracks to avoid traffic.
To start a tram network, you’ll need a Tram Depot. While it’s pricier initially than a bus fleet, trams are quiet and eco-friendly.
You can build tram tracks like roads or train tracks, including one-way and double tracks, elevated options, bridges, cut-and-fill tracks, and tunnels.

The subway is a speedy, high-capacity local transit system. While it’s costly to set up initially, it’s a popular choice for time-conscious citizens. You can build it above ground or on elevated tracks, but the real advantage is its space-saving underground construction.
Just like trains, the subway needs a Subway Yard to supply trains. It has its own tracks, and passengers can access trains from underground and aboveground stations. You can also build double subway tracks, one-way tracks, elevated options, and tunnels, similar to other rail types.

Trains are great for carrying lots of passengers and goods. While they’re often used for longer trips, they can work for local routes too. To set up train lines, you’ll need a Rail Yard to manage your trains. Building the train system is expensive at first, but their high capacity makes it worth it over time.
Train infrastructure offers different options, like two-way and double tracks, one-way tracks, elevated tracks, bridges, tunnels, and tracks below ground. Trains can travel in both directions and use track switches. Stations have pre-built tracks that create switches when connected, no matter the track type.
You can expand train stations with extra platforms and link them to other transportation systems.

Water transportation provides both passenger and cargo services. Ships are capable of moving a significant number of passengers within the city and to and from Outside Connections. For intercity water transport, you need access to the map edges through seaways and the connection of harbors to these seaways.

Air transportation is a speedy choice for moving people and goods between cities. Airplanes can’t carry as much as ships or trains, but they’re much faster.
Airports need a lot of space, and International Airports are quite large. They can generate significant traffic between the city and the airport, and they set height limits on nearby buildings to prevent collisions. When placing an airport, you can see where these height limits apply.
Creating air transport lines is easy; all you need are the airports themselves. You connect them to Outside Connections using the line tool, and planes start using the routes you create.
